    Installing TFS2010 Beta2 with a FQDN

Wow, it took me three four days to figure out how to properly install TFS 2010 Beta2 using a Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN).

Perhaps you can save some time seeing which steps are necessary to get it up and running.

As a basis for the installation Keith Patton provided a good bunch of information so feel free to have a look at his blog to find some more information. I think that some steps are missing in his description due to the fact that it did not work properly following the mentioned steps.

I advise you to print his blog entry and use it as the guideline for the configuration. Compare every step with my screenshots to proof, where to fill in the FQDN and where to use the netbios server name.

    01_Setup

    02_StartPage

    03_OptionsPage

    04_SetupFinish

Now start the configuration. The scenario was based on a server which was part of an Active Directory domain. Though it is a single server installation, we need to use advanced setup due to the reporting services account which needs to be split from using a domain account at Sharepoint level.

    05_ConfigurationWizard

    06_Database

    07_Account

    08_ApplicationTier

    09_ReportingWizard

    10_ReportingServices

    09_ReportingWizard

    10_ReportingServices

    11_AnalysisServices

    14_SharepointAccount

    15_TeamProjectCollection

    16_TFS_SettingsReview

Click to enlarge the setting overview.

If you have no existing Report Server database, you can create one using the Reporting Services Configuration Manager. If you have a clean installed Reporting Services, there will probably be one already.

    17_SQLReportDatabase

You will have to use Native mode. Check this on your installed reporting server database.

    18_ReadynessCheck

    19_ConfigStatus

    20_ConfigStatus2

    21_ConfigSummay

Click to open the configuration summary shown in TFS Admin Console.

We have to add an Sharepoint mapping in Central Administration now (have a look at the linked blog entry by Keith) how to get there.

    22_AddAlternateURLs

Change the URLs as described by Keith in TFS Admin Console.

    23_ChangeURLsOnTFS

    24_SharepointWebAppSettings

Modify the reporting services settings in the TFS Admin Console:

    25_ReportingServices

    26_ReportingServices2

    27_ReportingServices3

    28_ReportingReconfigured

The result should look like this.

Now edit the access rights as mentioned by Keith.

    29_ModifiedAccessSharepointExtensions

Now, a good bunch of configuration work is done. Create a new team project. You should be able to open the portal website from a remote pc:

    http://ksimons01.letsgetagile.de/sites/MyCollection/Test123/Dashboards/ProjectDashboard_wss.aspx

Some reports could be missing due to the fact that TfsRedirect.aspx will still provide the netbios name using a misconfigured ReportServerUrl which is cached.

Have a look at the Redirection settings at the bottom of the debug page:

    Test link: http://ksimons01.letsgetagile.de/sites/MyCollection/Test123/_layouts/TfsRedirect.aspx?tf:Type=WebAccess&tf:Test=1

To fix this issue, clear the redirector cache:

    http://ksimons01.letsgetagile.de/sites/MyCollection/Test123/_layouts/TfsRedirect.aspx?tf:Type=WebAccess&tf:ClearCache=1&tf:Test=1

Check again using the test link above. If it did not work try the last link with one of the tf:Type settings: Report, Reports, ReportLists. Ignore shown exceptions. Check again by using the test link.

The only issue I could not yet fix is, that some provided Excel Workbooks have invalid connection information stored within. You will have to fix them using the Connection command under the Team tab in Excel.

I am really looking forward to the final release and hope Microsoft will provide some more technical information on this topic. The manual clearing of the cache should be done automatically when changing the Reportserver Url in TFS Admin Console at least.

Update: If you have any problems related to some links (like the portal home link) still pointing to the netbios name of the sharepoint server in the project portal, your AAM is configured wrong.  You need to extend your website properly (read this entry, and topic “Mistake #3” here).

    Composite Application Guidance / Prism

After joining a session at dotnet cologne related to the Composite Application Guidance, which is also known as PRISM, I started to search for further information on that topic and found some training videos Jeff Brand produced. It is a series of videos related to the topic of structuring your WPF application using PRISM in detail.

The Composite Application Guidance was built by the Microsoft patterns & practices team who released the project as open source. The project targets the software architecture of Line Of Business applications related to WPF and Silverlight, describes the approach and includes assemblies containing needed architectural classes.

An updated version which includes many Silverlight examples has also been released some month ago.

    Getting informed

While I am working in a project since month it is important for me to spend time for further technology training thus I participated in three conferences in the last weeks which were focused on WPF and Silverlight.

The first workshop was related to Silverlight and Databinding, a first glimpse at RIA Services and the general Silverlight development flow presented by Oliver Scheer at FlashForumKonferenz 09.

Some days later I joined the Xtopia Roadshow and the dotnet cologne community event which offered excellent tracks for beginners and advanced developers related to Silverlight and WPF development.

My interview for the Computerwoche is now online

Some weeks ago Peter Ilg of the well known magazine “Computerwoche” interviewed me on the topic “Früh selbstständig? Tipps für junge Freiberufler” (Early self-employed? Hint for young freelancers).

It discusses the trend that every fifth IT-professional starts to work as a freelancer in a very young age just after finishing studies. Due to the fact that this was exactly what I have done the journalist requested my contact data at GULP. The article is quite long and shows my motivation for decisions and expresses my values quite well.

It is published in the actual copy of the magazine and can also be read online (in german).

    Enjoy reading!

Localisation testing of multilanguage .NET applications

When you create multilingual .NET applications, it is necessary to test the application build in the correct language context. By using LocTester it is possible to execute an assembly in the desired culture context. When I tried LocTester with the source code included testing utility it worked fine. To get it running using a multi assembly application I had to make some modifications:

    clip_image001

You also have to copy LocTester to the application path where the executed assembly is located. Otherwise related assemblies won't be found. If anyone has a hint on how to change this behavior, please comment or mail me.

Microsoft has some hints on this topic which can be found in the MSDN library, i.e. to test your applications localizability by translating it into a pseudo language containing foreign characters (like using  "ç" instead of "c" or "ä" instead of "a") and adding some text to vary the length of text tokens.

If you want to test your application with another Windows UI language you will need the Language Interface Pack (LIP) for Windows XP or Windows Vista.

Generating a MS Project plan out of Conchangos Scrum Template

The first thing which probably comes to your mind while reading the subject is: why would somebody want to do this? If you are familiar with Conchangos Scrum template you know that many reports which you need to control your Scrum project are already included.

So what is the sense of using MS Project? The simple answer: there is none. The customer demands MS Project plans to track progress and to have a transparent view at the progress. He could not been convinced of using agile reports as a basis for planning, etc. I could not influence this situation due to various reasons so the scenario which had to be solved was:

    clip_image001

The solution I have found is the following:

    • Extract the necessary data by creating a OLAP report with the information: One cumulated row per PBI per Person including the work remaining and the TFS WorkItem Id. I have chosen a cumulated item per PBI per person to avoid micro management and allow optimized parallel planning based on requirements.
    • Save this report as an excel file.
    • Create a MS Project Add-In using VSTO which reads the excel file and refreshes the Actual Work as Planned Work - Work Remaining.
    • You will see the progress of the tasks in MS Project.

    image

This solution took me three days to set up. The best solution for this problem probably is : convince your customer to trust in agile project management.

    a) Vielen Dank für Ihr uns entgegengebrachtes Vertrauen.

Fehler TF30170: Fehler in Plug-In "Microsoft.ProjectCreationWizard.

    • Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Language Pack - English
    • Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Language Pack - German
    • Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Service Pack 1
    • Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Service Pack 1 Language Pack - English
    • Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Service Pack 1 Language Pack - German
    • Team Foundation Server 2008 SP 1

Danach erschien folgender Fehler:

    “HTTP-Fehler 500.19 - Internal Server Error

Changed the following values located in the applicationHost.config file located in Windows\system32\inetsrv\config.

Change all of the following values located in section <configSections> --> <sectionGroup name="system.webServer">

    • <section name="handlers" overrideModeDefault="Deny" /> change this value from "Deny" to "Allow"

    • <section name="modules" allowDefinition="MachineToApplication" overrideModeDefault="Deny" /> change this value from "Deny" to "Allow"

    image

    Team Foundation Error

Creating an instance of the COM component with CLSID {B69003B3-C55E-4B48-836C-BC5946FC3B28} from the IClassFactory failed due to the following error: 8007000e.

    1. Open VS 2008 and wait until Team Members is not "working..."
    2. Right-click on it and select Personal Settings
    3. Under Collaboration, click Change
    4. On the opened dialog select None and click OK
    5. Click OK once again

    Cross Functional Teams in Scrum

    Erste Schritte in Scrum Prozessen
